Newcastle District Community & Learning Partnership

Counselling and Play therapy for children and young people affected by family breakdown and conflict in partnership with schools located in the Newcastle, Clayton, Wolstanton, Chesterton and Kidsgrove Clusters of the Borough.

As schools throughout the area find themselves seeking out additional support for disadvantaged youngsters, Childtalk has seen a dramatic increase in the number of referrals made by school staff.

Working in Partnership with the Newcastle District C&LP, and school head teachers, Childtalk has received funding to support, through the provision of one to one counselling and play therapy, children and young people who are affected by a destabilised family life.

Over 40 schools in the Newcastle District are now eligible to request support free of charge for young people unable to cope in school as a result of problems at home. A full list of schools involved in the partnership is available.

Individual sessions will be provided in school (or at an alternative location if requested) on a regular basis to support young people through the trauma of their parents divorce/separation, domestic violence or family conflict. Experience, fully trained counsellors will use strategies to help young people cope with loss, behavioural/friendship problems, anger and anxiety usually associated with family unrest. The emotional problems associated with family breakdown impact on learning and can cause disruptive behaviour, loss of concentration, poor attendance and low levels of attainment as young people find themselves unable to access support from parents who are also struggling to cope.

Safer Stronger Communities – Newcastle Borough Council

Partnership Action Plan to tackle anti social behaviour and domestic violence in the Borough.

Childtalk has secured funding from the Safer Stronger Communities Grant to work in partnership with the Borough Council, Police and schools to support children and young people living within the Newcastle area affected by family conflict who are displaying anti-social behaviour. This project aims to deliver one to one counselling to reduce the affect of domestic abuse on young people thus reducing the incidents of anti social behaviour linked to families in conflict.

Children & Family Court Advisory Support Service Partnership

In partnership with Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford CAFCASS Childtalk is providing support to children and young people whose parents are involved in court proceedings in order to resolve family issues such as contact.

Approximately 8 sessions of one to one counselling will be provided to young people requiring the opportunity to have their wishes and feelings considered when parents separate. Confidential counselling will enable a young person to express their feelings in a safe environment without fear of upsetting their parents. Through the counselling process the young person will then be encouraged to share with their parents their thoughts and feelings and for parents to understand the impact that family separation has had on the children.

Childtalk provides a confidential service aimed at supporting young people. We will not pass information to anyone unless we are concerned that a child is in danger of being hurt.

Referrals can be made to the service by your CAFCASS Officer.
